Sonja’s work in the law is informed by her background in psychology and social work. Accordingly, she brings a balance of legal knowledge and pragmatism to her practice that is particularly well suited to Family Law and Estate Planning.

Sonja has practiced exclusively in the area of Family Law since graduating from law school. Sonja is a qualified neutral under Rule 114, and she enjoys assisting parties who are seeking alternatives to litigation through mediation, parenting time expediting, or parenting consulting.

Professional and Community Activities

Sonja has continued her commitment to serving the community. She joined the Tubman Board of Directors in 2011 and focuses her board activities on Tubman’s Public Policy efforts. She volunteers as a low-bono referral attorney for Tubman Pro Bono Volunteer Lawyers Network and as Pro Bono Mediation for Ramsey and Hennepin Counties. She previously sat on the Board of Directors of ElderCare Rights Alliance from 2007 through 2011 and was a member of the St. Paul Mayor’s Advisory Council on Aging from 2010 through 2011. She frequently volunteers with state-wide and local political races. Sonja is a member of the Minnesota State Bar Association, Association of Family and Conciliation Court (AFCC), the Ramsey County Bar Association, and the Family Law League. She has taught a variety of CLEs including for AFCC and Family Law Institute and has written articles for the Family Law Forum and Volunteer Lawyers Network.



Sonja lives in St. Paul with her family, and cat. She enjoys cooking, yoga and photography.


Sonja graduated (cum laude) from the University of St. Thomas School of Law, with a JD, in 2006. Before law school Sonja earned a B.A. degree cum laude in Psychology and Social Work from the University of St. Thomas.

Sonja received the 2006 University of St. Thomas (UST) School of Law “Living the Mission Award for Scholarly Engagement and Societal Reform” for her work in the Elder Law Clinic addressing quality of care issues in nursing homes. In law school, she served as Community Outreach Coordinator for UST Law’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, Co-chaired the Student Ambassadors, and volunteered as a peer mentor and with the Street Law program, teaching law to high school students in South Minneapolis
